Digital learning that works for African universities

I lead Open, Distance and eLearning at Kibabii University and research how online and blended learning can raise completion where bandwidth and devices are limited.

What I do

  • Design and governance of ODeL programmes and learning platforms
  • Learning management systems (Moodle), blended course design and instructional design
  • Self-directed and technology-enabled learning, gamification and extended reality
  • Staff training for online teaching

Evidence from my work

  • Director, ODeL, Kibabii University (2025 onward); ODeL Board (2018 to 2020); Technology Enabled Learning Policy Committee (2020)
  • Commonwealth of Learning training in blended courses on Moodle (2021); Instructional Design certificate (2019)
  • Contributed to Open University of Kenya learning modules in cyber security, digital service management and IT project management
  • Researcher on the Erasmus+ UNIHUBS capacity-building project (EUR 799,943) and the Africa AI Upskilling programme (FATE Foundation and Google)
  • Papers: E-learning Transforming Economies (2016); A Multi-Agent System for ICT-based Distance Learning (2016)

Supervision and examination

I have supervised and examined theses on LMS and web-conference usability, gamified learning systems, e-learning for the competency-based curriculum, XR simulation, mobile-app usefulness and self-directed learning adoption.

Partners and funders

Commonwealth of Learning; Open University of Kenya; Erasmus+ UNIHUBS consortium; FATE Foundation and Google.

Sustainable Development Goals

  • SDG 4 (quality education)
  • SDG 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure)
  • SDG 10 (reduced inequalities)

Collaboration ideas

  • Learning-analytics studies to find which platform features raise completion in low-bandwidth settings
  • Scaffolding self-directed learning for Kenyan university students
  • Training programmes for lecturers moving to online and blended delivery
